Alleppey one of the most sought after tourist destinations in Kerala consists of a wide network of backwaters, lagoons and fresh water rivers crisscrossing the land. This crisscrossing canal, which was once busy water ways, evoked comparisons with Venice Referred to as the Venice of the East.
These large networks of canals provide Alleppey its lifeline. Alleppey was one of the busiest centers of trade in the past with one of the best known ports along the Malabar Coast. Even today it retains its charm as the centre for Coir carpet industries and prawn farming.
Ideally located as a base for backwater cruising, Alappuzha attracts tourists the year around for that singular experience.
A cruise along the backwaters is one of the most enchanting experiences that Kerala offers. Exploring this labyrinth network of waterways , which weave through the villages set amidst green vegetation offers glimpses of Kerala’s unique rural lifestyle, where land and water are inseparable.
The piece-de-resistance of cruising in the backwater is a trip to the Kuttand region a vast area of reclaimed land covered in brilliant paddy fields, separated by dykes from the waters that are actually a few feet above.
Alleppey has played one of the most important roles in providing routes for water transport since time immemorial through inlands of Kerala and all types of goods were transported in majestic large boats , called the “ kettuvalloms” (in the Malayalam language, Kettu means "tied with ropes", and vallam means "boat"). With the advent of roads, bridges and ferry services, gradually the kettuvalloms went off the scene. Today, Now these kettuvalloms are back again as a major tourist attraction as a modern moving boat house .These boats have been redesigned to accommodate every luxury that a Deluxe class hotel room will offer and hence have been rightfully called houseboats.
Kerala houseboats size vary from, about to 95 feet feet in length and a width of around 13 feet to in the middle for one bedroom houseboat and , big houseboats with up 107 feet long and up to 19 feet wide. The materials that go into the making are all local and Eco friendly bamboo poles, coconut fiber ropes, bamboo mats, coir carpets etc.
Houseboats can be rented for 21 hours(12 Noon TO 9 AM) to few days and there is a new hop-on, hop-off service through remote backwaters in a shared-houseboat. Houseboats come equipped with well furnished bedroom, sit-outs, kitchen and modern bath and toilet facilities and serve all meals during the stay. Some of the house boats even sport an air-conditioner, though most people prefer a calm cruise with lanterns which add to the rustic feel. The houseboats are manned by drivers and a cook. From the boat one can observe the everyday village life of people, watch birds, and relax in the middle of the lake.
